38-year-old killed in Birmingham shooting that also injured another man
Authorities have released the name of a 38-year-old who was killed in a shooting that also left another man injured in southwest Birmingham.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Melvin Anthony Burkes. He lived in Birmingham.
The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. Wednesday in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue S.W.
Police received a call of a person shot and arrived to find a man who had sustained a non-life-threatening wound, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Officers then found Burkes lying on the sidewalk with critical gunshot injuries.
Bystanders provided aid to Burkes until officers took over life-saving measures, Fitzgerald said.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service took both victims to UAB Hospital, where Burkes was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m.
The unknown shooter fled the scene.
Fitzgerald said one person was detained for questioning, but that person was released after it was determined he was not the shooting suspect.
Burkes is Birmingham’s 134th homicide victim this year. Of those, 10 have been ruled justifiable and two others happened in previous years, but the victims died in 2024.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 169 homicides, including the 134 in Birmingham.
