36-year-old Lee County inmate found dead in jail
An inmate died Saturday afternoon in the Lee County Detention Center.
Sheriff Jay Jones on Sunday identified the inmate Korey Scott Smith. He was 36 and lived in Notasulga.
Smith was booked into the jail Oct. 5, 2022, by Opelika police on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was discovered unresponsive at 3:50 p.m. Saturday. Corrections deputies and medical staff performed CPR and used an AED. They were assisted by Opelika Fire medics, but revival efforts were unsuccessful.
Jones said as is standard procedure with an in-custody death, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office will perform an independent investigation.
