32-year-old man killed in shooting that also injured Oneonta police officer identified

Authorities have released the name of a man killed in gunfire that also injured an Oneonta police officer.

Alabama State Troopers on Tuesday identified the slain man as John Joseph Hampton. He was 32 and lived in the Jefferson County area.

Oneonta police were dispatched about 11 a.m. Monday to Sand Valley Road on a report of a suspicious person.

Authorities said a man – now identified as Hampton – was “beating” on the doors of homes in the neighborhood. One woman let the man use his phone.

Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said no one in the neighborhood knew Hampton and authorities don’t know why he was there. The sheriff said he appeared to be possibly homeless or at least temporarily displaced.

One of the residents called the Oneonta police chief on his cell phone, and he dispatched officers to the scene.

When police arrived, said Senior Alabama State Trooper Brandon Bailey, “Hampton fled on foot before being tased and starting a fight with officers.”

Hampton ran off into the woods where a brief standoff ensued. He then brandished a gun and shots were fired.

Hampton was pronounced dead on the scene.

An Oneonta police officer was struck in the upper leg and taken to UAB Hospital. He is expected to survive.

Oneonta Police Chief Charles Clifton released this statement on Facebook:

“I want to thank the Oneonta community for all of your phone calls regarding our officer who suffered a gunshot wound earlier today. Currently, I am with this officer at UAB hospital where he has just been admitted to a room in ICU after a very long (first) surgery. More surgery will be needed on his road to recovery. He is in a lot of pain and discomfort, but his condition is critical but very stable. He will survive the incident and for that we thank God. “

“Please continue to keep this officer in your prayers along with all the other persons/officers involved in this incident,’’ the chief wrote. “Out of respect for the officer and his family we are withholding the officers name at this time.”

Bailey said the investigation is ongoing by the State Bureau of Investigation. Once the probe is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Blount County District Attorney’s Office.
