3-year-old girl beaten to death by young boys while mothers were at casino, sheriff says
Two mothers and two children have each been charged in the death of a 3-year-old in Baton Rouge, La., where police say two boys ages 10 and 12 beat the toddler to death while their mothers gambled at a casino, authorities said.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office was notified of a 3-year-old in critical condition at an area hospital last Monday just before 4 a.m. A child had called 911, said the girl was not breathing, there were no adults in the home and he didn’t know the address where they were located.
Deputies were in the area knocking on doors in an attempt to locate the children when the mothers, Terica Scott and Dineshia Yates, the mother of the 3-year-old, arrived, telling deputies they had just left a casino, according to WBRZ in Baton Rouge.
The 3-year-old was resuscitated by paramedics and taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed a brain bleed, along with bruises and abrasions to the face and body that were consistent with blunt force trauma. She died two days later.
In all, there were eight children left alone in the home, ranging in age from 11 months to 12 years. A 4-year-old girl in the home had similar injuries to the deceased 3-year-old and detectives determined the 10-year-old and 12-year-old boys had beaten both of the toddlers.
The mothers both admitted to being aware of abusive behavior by some of the children, but did nothing to prevent it, according to an arrest report obtained by the outlet. The night of the incident was not the first time they had left the children unsupervised, according to the report.
The two juvenile boys were taken into custody and transported to the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Facility, charged with 2nd-degree murder and simple battery. Scott and Yates have been charged as principals to 2nd-degree murder and battery.
As of Monday afternoon, Scott and Yates remained in the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail under $40,000 bond each. Yates also had two active warrants from unrelated cases out of Baker, La.
