3 takeaways from No. 13 Auburn’s 80-65 win against Vanderbilt

The streak continued for No. 13 Auburn as it cruised yet again, beating Vanderbilt 80-65. It was Auburn’s 10th consecutive win as the Tigers improved to 15-2 this season and 4-0 in the SEC.

Auburn and Alabama remain tied atop the league standings as the only undefeated teams remaining.

Vanderbilt took a 16-14 lead about eight minutes into the first half. From that point forward, Aubrun was nothing short of dominant, as it has been several times against buy-game opponents and SEC foes alike.

Here are three takeaways from the win:

Jaylin Williams continues his roll

The jump Williams has made and continues to make this season is nothing short of incredible. He has gotten his super-senior year, became Auburn’s winning player in school history and continued the best run of play of his college career.

Frankly, by this point, he’s working his way into All-SEC consideration.

Williams didn’t miss a shot in the first half. He scored 17 points. He made all five of his shots from the field and all five of his free throws. His scoring propelled a first-half run for Auburn to pull away. More on that below.

He didn’t miss a shot in the second half either.

He finished the game with 21 points and shooting 7-7 from the field in a night that was nothing less than perfect.

Williams has now scored at least 20 points in four of Auburn’s last seven games including Wednesday. In the six games leading into Wednesday, Williams was averaging a 72% field goal percentage and 15.2 points per game. Those numbers will only increase once Wednesday’s stats are factored in.

Auburn remains dominant in first halves

Auburn has had a few second-half lulls this season. LSU had a 21-2 second-half run against Auburn last weekend. Poor second-half defense cost Auburn a win over Baylor. Pearl has emphasized the improvements he’s wanted to see in his team’s second-half defense.

And while those moments have largely been fleeting, Auburn has had zero difficulties in the first half.

Auburn has continued to find ways to effortlessly pull away from opponents in the first half this season. Auburn leads the nation in first-half point differential this season. Its 18.4-point overall average margin of victory is sixth-best in the country.

Auburn has not beaten teams over this 10-game win streak, it’s blown them out. The SEC has been one of the toughest leagues in the nation this season.

But through four games, Auburn has breezed through it.

After Vanderbilt took a 16-14 first-half lead, Auburn closed the remaining 12 minutes of the first half on a 27-8 run. It pushed Auburn out to another large lead at halftime that it would not relinquish. Auburn lead 41-24 at halftime.

That’s become the script for Auburn over this win streak: take a big lead into the locker room and cruise for the remaining 20 minutes. Outside of the Texas A&M win and Baylor, Auburn has not seen many stressful endings of games this season.

Auburn’s bench continues to dominate

Analytically, Auburn’s bench lineup is actually the best five-man lineup in the country. No, that’s not a joke.

For a lineup made of entirely bench players to be that efficient compared to some of the most star-studded lineups in the country? It just goes to show how right Pearl was when he’s talked about how deep this Auburn team is.

Against Vanderbilt, Auburn’s bench scored 29 points. The Commodores bench scored 18. At one point, Auburn led in bench points 19-2.

That is a huge advantage for Pearl’s team.

Pearl has frequently mentioned his uncertainty on whether the depth of his team was a testament to how good his bench is or a concern over his starters not being good enough.

It would appear the answer is the former.
