3 takeaways from Auburn football’s A-Day spring practice
Auburn football wrapped up its spring football period with its traditional A-Day festivities Saturday afternoon.
Unlike previous spring game formats, Auburn elected to do a practice in front of the fans inside of Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Auburn coach Hugh Freeze confirmed Thursday morning that it will run like a normal practice. The freshman also participated in live scrimmages throughout the day.
Here are three takeaways from Auburn football’s A-Day:
Deuce Knight gets first team reps, Jackson Arnold out
Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold did not participate in drills Saturday, after suffering a leg injury Thursday in practice.
Freshman Deuce Knight took the bulk of the snaps under center and did not disappoint Auburn fans in his Jordan-Hare Stadium debut.
After misfiring on his first pass attempt during 7-on-7, Knight rolled out the pocket for a 35-yard passing touchdown to Perry Thompson. He followed that throw with two more touchdowns to Horatio Fields and Cam Coleman.
John Colvin also got some snaps in behind Knight, finding Thompson for a touchdown on his first pass attempt of the afternoon.
Auburn’s secondary competes, Perry Thompson elite
In the 7-on-7 period the Tiger defense intercepted Knight twice. Safety Taye Seymore got the first interception from a tipped pass across the middle.
Freshman safety Eric Winters snag the second interception after an overthrow from Knight.
Sophomore Perry Thompson had an impressive afternoon dominating in the 7-on-7 and 1-on-1 drills. He made two diving catches during the first live period and won majority of his routes in during the 1-on-1 session.
Final period live scrimmage
Auburn ended the practice with a 15-minute scrimmage between the first team offense and defense.
Damari Alston got the start at running back, rushing on the Tigers first two plays. Knight’s next two passes were incomplete wrapping up the first series for the Tigers.
In the second series, Jeremiah Cobb got majority of the reps at running back as the offense failed to score on back-to-back drives. Alex McPherson missed a 55-yard field goal to conclude that drive.
Perry Thompson continued his stellar day putting the offense in the redzone to start the Tigers third series. After two incompletions from Knight, Towns McGough drilled his second field goal attempt.
On the fourth series, Knight was intercepted by freshman safety AnQuon Fegans in the red zone. Knight followed up with a touchdown on the next series to Horatio Fields.
