Sara Phillips was constantly on the move.

A three-sport athlete at Hewitt-Trussville, Phillips participated in volleyball, basketball and softball, excelling in all three. She played in six state championship games — four in softball and two in basketball — winning three titles in softball.

“I’d say she’s an athlete first because in this day and time, you don’t have kids playing three sports,” said Hewitt-Trussville basketball coach Tonya Hunter. “Everybody wants to specialize, but she didn’t. She played three sports and was committed to it for all four years. You really don’t hear about that, especially at the 7A level.

“She’s the most focused kid I’ve ever seen,” Hunter said of Phillips, who was selected The Birmingham News girls Athlete of the Year.
