3 questions for Alabama football to answer against Chattanooga
Alabama football’s final home game of the 2023 season has arrived. The Crimson Tide faces Chattanooga Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, looking to continue on the right path before the Iron Bowl and SEC championship game.
The Crimson Tide and Mocs are set to kick off at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be aired on SEC Network+.
Before kickoff, here are three questions for UA to answer.
Will Alabama get style points?
Alabama is still in the hunt for the College Football Playoff. Ranked No. 8 entering the weekend’s games, the Tide will need to win out and get some help to make the field of four at year’s end.
One thing that can help sounds like a throwback to the BCS era. Style points.
Nick Saban has harped on the need for Alabama to continue on a positive path throughout the week.
“This is either a game that you focus on correctly, you go out and practice and prepare correctly, and you build on the momentum that you’ve improved with over the last weeks,” Saban said. “And that helps you get better for what’s coming up in the future. If don’t do that, you don’t have a good showing, you sort of lose your rhythm and rhythm is a little bit like momentum. Sometimes you lose momentum in the game (and) it’s hard to get it back, so you got to always play the next play and keep answering the bell and that’s really kind of how we need to approach this game”
With the Iron Bowl coming up fast, followed by the SEC title game, Alabama needs to not just win, but stay on the right track.
Who gets to play?
Saban didn’t explode this week as he has in previous years. No big show about how reporters need to show more respect to UA’s FCS opponent, or angry metaphors involving tin horns.
He was complimentary of Chattanooga, particularly the Mocs’ edge rushers and offensive attack. And those compliments are true, but it’s still Chattanooga.
The game could represent an opportunity to get more players some time on the field in a live situation. Alabama could once again be without several regular contributors including Ja’Corey Brooks, Deontae Lawson an Jaylen Key, so perhaps the rotation at those positions gets deeper.
Saban said on his Thursday radio show that Jalen Milroe is back to full speed after playing though a thigh injury against Kentucky. Would Saban go down the bench to get players like Ty Simpson, Dylan Lonergan and Tyler Buchner some reps?
How will the crowd be?
Saban asked Alabama’s home crowd to get loud for the Crimson Tide’s wins against Tennessee and LSU. Mission accomplished on that front, Bryant-Denny Stadium was as loud as it’s been in years.
Now it’s senior day, UA’s final home game of the season. Saban once again encouraged the Crimson Tide faithful to show out and make their presence known for the players playing one last game in Tuscaloosa.
Unfortunately for Saban and the seniors, It’s an 11 a.m. CT game. Against Chattanooga.
On the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The factors against Alabama are adding up.
Maybe the Crimson Tide won’t need a massive crowd impact against the Mocs. But if the game is close for some reason, it will be interesting to see how the fans respond.
