3 questions for Alabama football before matchup with South Florida
It’s game day for Alabama football. After last week’s disappointing loss to Texas, the Crimson Tide has its first road game of the year, against South Florida at Raymond James Stadium.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. and will be aired on ABC. Before that happens, here are three questions for Alabama.
What happens at quarterback?
Tyler Buchner will reportedly get his first start of the season on Saturday, taking over for Jalen Milroe. What that means for the offense will be interesting to see.
Buchner hasn’t had much in the way of college game experience. He was slated as the starter last season at Notre Dame, but dealt with injuries most of the year.
He did help the Fighting Irish to a win in the Gator Bowl over South Carolina, and won MVP honors for that game. However, his performance was spotty and he threw two pick-sixes, so whether he can bring the consistency Nick Saban will want to see is an interesting plot point.
If Buchner struggles and Saban opts to make another QB change in the future, it will be interesting to see which way the head coach turns. Will he look back to Milroe or will it be time for Ty Simpson or Dylan Lonergan to get their chance?
That’s unlikely to happen against USF, a clearly overmatched opponent. However, if the Crimson Tide are up enough that Saban can go to the bench for a quarterback, it will be interesting to see which order the signal-callers enter the game.
Can the offensive line pull it together?
Saban seemed somewhat flabbergasted by the offensive line’s performance against Texas. Milroe was sacked five times and spend a good chunk of the game running for his life on other plays.
That will have to improve if Alabama is to have a successful season. Putting the pieces together will need to start against USF with SEC play starting next week against Ole Miss.
“I think we only got sacked once on the blitz and the back cut the linebacker and he got up and still sacked the quarterback,” Saban said of the Texas problems.” The other issues was really basically four-man rush, three-man rush. I think that he has done OK. I think what we need to do as an offense is everybody’s gotta pay more attention to detail.
“We can’t give bird and rabbits so the other team knows when we’re passing so they can tee off. All these little things sort of add up to create a disadvantage for you if you don’t get them fixed. These are all things that our players need to understand and need to do so we can protect better so the quarterback has a better chance to operate.”
Can the secondary improve?
On paper, Alabama is far more talented than USF. Still, the Bulls have head coach Alex Golesh, who helped beat the Crimson Tide last year as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator.
Golesh is going to bring a lighting fast system, and he’s proven he knows how to test the Crimson Tide’s secondary.
“We found an answer,” Golesh said of Tennessee’s game plan last season. “Found a way to create some explosives and then kept exploiting that, which was cool from a schematic standpoint.”
Explosive plays were a huge issue for Alabama against Texas, with Longhorn quarterback Quinn Ewers torching the Tide deep throughout the game.
With Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss next on the schedule, it will be interesting to see how well the Crimson Tide secondary is able to keep up with the speed.
