3 players who must step up for Alabama heading into March Madness, per Nate Oats

Alabama men’s basketball is about to enter the postseason and could use a few players rising to the occasion.

No. 5 Alabama will be the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament this week in Nashville. The Crimson Tide will face either Georgia, Oklahoma or Kentucky on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Before heading to Nashville, Alabama coach Nate Oats was asked which players he wants to step up in the near future.

Oats first mentioned forward Jarin Stevenson.

“He’s got a lot more that he can give us,” Oats said. “I’ve got to do a better job getting it out of him, putting him in position to succeed.”

Oats also mentioned guard Aden Holloway. Then Oats brought up Mo Dioubate.

“(Dioubate) has shown what he’s capable of,” Oats said. “I think he hasn’t quite been as good as he could have been here these last few weeks. We need it. He won us the Grand Canyon game. He’s a guy who just gives us something a lot different than pretty much anybody else on the roster. We need that out of him. Or maybe an SEC Tournament game or an NCAA Tournament game where he’s the only guy who can do what he does. Comes in and sparks us and gives us win.”

As for Holloway, he has scored in single digits the past two games. Oats was asked what it will take to get him going again.

“He’s got to be more aggressive,” Oats said. “We’ve got to probably find some actions to get him going. He’s got to play a little bit better defense so we can keep him on the floor longer. I think a combination of all that. The ball’s got to start moving a little more. I think the ball has been a little stagnant, sticky. The more the ball moves, the more open shots he gets. We’ve also played against some pretty good defensive teams that have really good defensive guards.”

Pair those players taking their games up a notch with the likes of Mark Sears, Grant Nelson and company, and Alabama could be playing a ways into the postseason again.

“If we get all those guys playing their best basketball, we’ve got a pretty high ceiling,” Oats said.
