3 NFL ultimate ironmen have Alabama football roots

Three players with Alabama football roots played as many snaps at their positions as they could during the 2023 NFL season.

Carolina Panthers center Bradley Bozeman and Cincinnati Bengals right tackle Jonah Williams played every offensive snap for their teams this season, and New York safety Xavier McKinney played every defensive snap for the Giants.

Only two NFL defensive players were on the field for all their possible snaps during the 2023 campaign, and the other 100-percenter also played for the Giants – linebacker Bobby Okereke.

Bozeman and Williams were among the 19 NFL linemen who did not miss an offensive snap during the regular season.

Two other players from Alabama high schools and colleges almost played all their possible snaps. New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley and Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II missed nine defensive snaps apiece as they played at a 99.2 percent rate.

McKinney and Mosley were on the field more than any other players with Alabama football roots during the 2023 regular season. McKinney had 1,128 defensive snaps and 103 special-teams plays for 1,231 plays. Mosley had 1,128 defensive snaps and 81 special-teams plays for 1,209 plays.

Thirteen players from Alabama high schools and colleges who played at least 1,000 offensive or defensive snaps in the 2023 regular season include:

Defensive linemen do not typically reach 1,000 defensive snaps in a season, and only one – Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby – did in the 2023 regular season. Derrick Brown (Auburn) of the Carolina Panthers finished third among defensive linemen with 940 defensive snaps and Daron Payne (Shades Valley, Alabama) of the Washington Commanders placed fourth with 924.

With his special-teams duty, Brown was on the field for more than 1,000 plays – 940 defensive snaps and 82 special-teams plays.

One other player with Alabama football roots was on the field for 1,000 plays during the 2023 regular-season: Philadelphia Eagles safety Reed Blankenship (West Limestone) had 943 defensive snaps and 124 special-teams plays.

During the regular season, 85 players were on the field for at least 300 special-teams plays. Eight of them were from Alabama high schools and colleges:
