3 most common last names in Alabama
Last names vary as much as the people who have them. It turns out, however, there are certain trends when it comes to surnames.
Ancestry.com recently analyzed data to determine the most popular last name in each state. Overall, Smith, along with Johnson, Miller, Jones, Williams and Anderson, are the most common surnames in the U.S.
There are regional differences, however. If you live in the northwest, your last name is more likely to be Anderson than Brown, which is slightly more common on the East Coast.
The southwestern part of the country shows a greater variety in last names States with large Latino populations, places like Texas, California, New Mexico and Arizona, boast a variety of names like Garcia, Hernandez, Martinez, and Chavez.
Hawaii is also unique. The three most-common surnames there – Lee, Wong and Kim, don’t appear in the top three anywhere else in the country. Massachusetts, with its large Irish population, is the only state where Sullivan makes it into the top three.

Alabama’s most common last names are Smith, Williams and Johnson. Those names are the most common in 12 other states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina and Oklahoma.
