3 men killed in Birmingham, Forestdale in just 7 hours now identified
Three men were shot to death in seven hours in Jefferson County on Tuesday, and their names have now been released.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as: Antonio Devon Coleman, 36; Demetrius Knight, 57; and Phillip Emmanuel Bailey, 35.
Coleman, of Birmingham, was killed just before 2 p.m. when gunfire erupted near the busy intersection of 40th Street and Jefferson Avenue.
Officers arrived at the location, went to a small business at the intersection and found Coleman unresponsive on the ground under that building’s awning. Police marked several shell casings near where the body was found.
He was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:03 p.m.
Police said details surrounding the shooting were limited and have not announced any arrests.
Coleman’s death comes eight months after he was acquitted of a capital murder charge. He had been arrested in 2020 for the killing of 47-year-old Jeffrey Deon Wormley, which had gone unsolved for 11 years prior to Coleman’s arrest. He was acquitted and released from jail in late January.
Knight, of Birmingham, was found fatally shot inside his wrecked vehicle in Forestdale.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday to the 1700 block of Huitt Street.
A resident called 911 to report someone had wrecked in the front yard, said Lt. Joni Money. The homeowner went out to check on the driver and found that he’d been shot.
Knight was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:06 p.m.
Authorities said Knight was driving his vehicle when another vehicle reportedly pulled beside him and opened fire. No arrests have been announced.
Bailey, of Hoover, was fatally shot shortly after 8:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of 13th Way S.W.
West Precinct officers were dispatched to the neighborhood after receiving several reports of gunfire.
When they arrived, they found Bailey lying on his back near a curb in between two vehicles. He was unresponsive and was pronounced dead on the scene at 9 p.m.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said detectives were in the early stages of the investigation had little information about what led up to the fatal shooting.
“We have a lot of people on the scene, but officers and detectives are trying to determine if there’s any information they can give us, because details limited,’’ he said. “No one has spoken yet about what led to the shooting.”
“We know people know something,’’ he said. “It’s just a matter of getting those details to our detectives.”
Birmingham’s two homicides on Tuesday brought the city’s homicide total for the year to 94. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
