3 men killed in Birmingham drive-by shooting; 4th injured

A hail of gunfire left three men dead and a fourth critically injured in Birmingham’s Smithfield community Friday afternoon.

Dozens of shots rang out about 2:45 p.m. in the 900 block of Center Street North.

Police said the men were standing outside of a house when it appears someone drove by and opened fire.

Investigators believe there were at least two shooters and said the shooting was targeted.

Police marked 34 shell casings but said they expect to find many more.

Two of the victims collapsed outside of the house where the shooting happened and a third ran less than a half a block away and collapsed on the side of another house.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service rushed the fourth victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It was a chaotic scene in the neighborhood as dozens of family members and friends flocked to the scene, many highly emotional.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is available.
