3 men burning trash outside Birmingham home engulfed by flames, 21-year-old killed

A 21-year-old man died this morning after he and two others were engulfed by flames while burning trash outside a southwest Birmingham home over the weekend.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the fatality victim as Michael Earl Williams Jr. He lived in Birmingham.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Williams and two other men used an accelerant to start a fire to burn a trash pile at a residence in the 1800 block of Fulton Avenue S.W.

All three became engulfed in flames. The injuries happened at 11:18 p.m. Saturday.

The men were taken to UAB Hospital where Williams was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The conditions of the other two men were not immediately available.

The blaze remains under investigation by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
