3 injured in drive-by shooting at vigil for Bessemer gas station triple homicide victims
Three people were injured Monday night in a drive-by shooting where a small vigil was taking place in memory of three men killed Friday night at a Bessemer Citgo.
Bessemer Police Chief Michael Wood said a small group of people — about six or seven — were gathered at gas station at 200 Fourth Avenue in Bessemer when a gunman or gunmen drove by and opened fire just before 9 p.m.
Three men were shot. They were taken to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Wood was clearly frustrated with the bloodshed in Bessemer over the long holiday weekend that left the three men dead Friday, three more injured in a separate shooting Sunday and then the three hurt on Monday.
“The Bessemer Police Department isn’t going to have this shit,’’ the chief said. “There are too many good citizens in this city for this to happen. We get a bad rap.”
The first shooting happened about after 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Det. Justin Burmeister said at least two of the victims were at the store together, and he was unsure about the third. They had not been there long when someone inside of a vehicle opened fire on them.
The shooting started outside in the parking lot and continued inside the store, Burmeister said.
It appeared the shooters got out of their car and followed the victims into the store, still shooting.
When the shooting ended, Christopher Eddins, 25, Ronald Dixon Jr., 20 and Wesley Fowler, 40, were all dead on the scene.
The shootings happened at the same gas station where a man and woman were injured in a barrage of gunfire earlier this month.
That shooting happened Aug. 5, and more than two dozen bullets struck a sedan that was near the gas pumps.
On Sunday, three men were inside a truck in the parking lot of a small business of the city’s busy Ninth Avenue North when they were approached, and shots were fired. Two of the victim’s sustained life-threatening injuries.
Wood said he does not believe the Sunday shooting was linked to the Friday triple homicide.
On Monday, police announced the arrest of 20-year-old Raukeem Cunningham, 20, on capital murder in the three slayings from Friday. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

Wood said he does believe the Monday’s shooting was linked to the Friday shooting.
“It’s definitely related to Friday night,’’ Wood said, “and if I had to guess it’s because we … put capital murder warrants on their boy.”
“They were doing a prayer vigil, and they did not notify us of that prayer vigil,’’ the chief said. “We’ve been covering these stores all day – not just this one but all of them to try to keep down any future trouble.”
Wood said police need the public to get involved.
“Gun violence is stupid and we’re not going to take it here in Bessemer,’’ he said.
The chief said he has called out all available resources.
“And will do so for the duration until we end this,’’ he said. “I’m past frustrated.”
“People depend on a gun to stop the fight,’’ he said, “and it’s got to stop. It’s not going to be tolerated.”
