3 in north Alabama charged with child abuse

Three people in DeKalb County were arrested on felony child abuse charges following a grand jury indictment.

Sheriff Nick Welden said Jeron Wright Maxwell, 47, of Sylvania; Rian Andrew Maxwell, 21, of Sylvania, and Bethany Ann Whittle, 36, of Fort Payne, were all charged with the abuse of a child under 18 years of age.

According to court documents, Rian Maxwell was arrested May 30.

Bond was set at $75,000. All three have apparently bonded out, according to jail records.

“All children deserve the right to feel safe and their safety is our number one priority,” DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said: “God entrusts us with His children to love and protect and we will do everything in our power to do that.”
