3 iconic Disney World attractions closing for ‘largest expansion’ in history of Magic Kingdom

Three iconic Disney World attractions are set to close July 7, the entertainment company announced.

Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and Liberty Square Riverboat in the Frontier Land area are closing July 7 as part of a largescale overhaul at the Orlando, Florida park.

The key change will be what Disney described as the “largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom,” and the addition of Piston Peaks National Park.

Centered on the hit “Cars” series, the land will be based on the history and themes of the American frontier and Rocky Mountains with “awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers.” The attraction will include off-road vehicles as part of an off-road rally race ride.

The area will also include a visitor’s lodge, Ranger HQ, trails and more to see, all set within the Disney and Pixar “Cars” universe, according to Disney’s blog.

“To make sure these buildings fit naturally within the surrounding majestic landscapes, Imagineers are using a style of architecture called ‘Parkitecture,’ which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment,” Disney said in its blog.

“From the outside, trees will provide a natural barrier between the off-road rally and other parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square. Rugged mountains with dramatic peaks will be nestled along a calming waterway across from Grizzly Hall, and soaring geysers from the famed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will stretch into the trails of our off-road rally,” the description added.

The Cars attractions aren’t the only change in store. Beyond the existing Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride, Disney is opening its first-ever land inspired by Disney Villains. The area will feature two major attractions, dining and shopping.
