3 former Alabama prep stars return to NFL rosters

Three former Alabama high school standouts returned to NFL rosters on Wednesday by securing practice-squad spots.

The Tennessee Titans signed defensive tackle Marlon Davidson (Greenville), the Green Bay Packers signed cornerback Zyon Gilbert (Jeff Davis) and the Carolina Panthers signed tight end Jordan Matthews (Madison Academy).

The Class 5A Lineman of the Year in 2015, Davidson was an All-SEC selection at Auburn before joining the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Davidson played in 19 games, started one and missed 21 as injuries and COVID-19 kept him off the field. He totaled 29 tackles, with one sack, one tackle for loss and one interception returned for a touchdown before Atlanta released him from injured reserve on Oct. 25, 2022.

Davidson returned this year as he went through the offseason program, training camp and preseason with San Francisco before starting the season on the 49ers’ practice squad. San Francisco released Davidson on Oct. 4.

The Titans signed Davidson as they put former Murphy High School standout Taylor Stallworth on injured reserve.

Stallworth had signed with the Titans on Oct. 9 for his third practice-squad stop in the NFL this season. Tennessee signed Stallworth for the active roster on Oct. 14, and the defensive tackle played six snaps in a 24-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens the next day for his first appearance in his sixth NFL season.

Matthews was a football and basketball standout for Madison Academy. He helped the Mustangs win the AHSAA Class 3A boys’ basketball championship in 2008 and reach the title game the next two seasons. In football, Matthews earned All-State recognition in 2009, when he caught 61 passes for 1,061 yards and 13 touchdowns to boost his prep total to 38 TD receptions.

At Vanderbilt, Matthews broke SEC career records with 262 receptions for 3,759 yards.

As a wide receiver, Matthews had caught 225 passes for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns for Philadelphia in his first three NFL seasons before the Eagles traded him to the Buffalo Bills during training camp in 2017.

Matthews has been bedeviled by injuries since the trade, and he made the transition to tight end in 2021. Since 2017, Matthews has 49 receptions for 615 yards and three touchdowns in 30 games with the Bills, Eagles and 49ers.

Matthews spent last season on injured reserve with San Francisco after suffering a knee injury at training camp.

A second-team All-State selection in 2015 and first-team All-State selection in 2016 at the Montgomery high school now known as J.A.G., Gilbert entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie from Florida International last year.

Gilbert played in three games, with one start, and recorded 14 tackles and one sack for the New York Giants.

But this year, Gilbert sustained a hamstring injury during the preseason, and the Giants waived him from injured reserve on Aug. 31.
