3 charged in January of 30-year-old man killed at Tuscaloosa apartment complex

Three people have been charged in the Tuscaloosa shooting death of a 30-year-old man in late January.

Authorities on Thursday identified the slain man as Demarkus Hall.

Kyandre Grant, age 44, is charged with capital murder and robbery. He was taken into custody Wednesday in Tennessee by the U.S. Marshals Smokey Mountain Regional Task Force and the Shelbyville Police Department.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said Grant’s prior offenses include robbery, domestic violence, and murder. Grant was convicted of murder in 1996 and received a 20- year sentence.

Grant is awaiting extradition. Once returned to Alabama, he will be held without bond in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

Rashad Aaron, 31, is charged with felony murder and robbery. He was taken into custody on Feb. 6, and is being held without bond under Aniah’s Law.

He has previous arrests for robbery and burglary, Kennedy said.

Jamil Prentice, 34, is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. He was taken into custody Feb. 1, and was released on $60,000 bond. He is currently in custody in another county on other charges, Kennedy said.

Tuscaloosa police were dispatched at 10:24 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, to a report of shots fired at Landmark Apartments on Old Greensboro Road.

When officers arrived, they found Hall wounded inside his vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Hall did not live at the apartment complex but was visiting friends there.

Kennedy said the investigation revealed that the victim was targeted for a robbery and was subsequently shot. Illegal drugs played a role in the case, he said.

Kennedy described the investigation as complex.

“The suspects have extensive criminal histories and took great pains to obscure their crime, destroy evidence, and elude capture,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy said multiple agencies took part in the probe.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Violent Crime Unit at 205-464-8690.
