3 arrests made in Rock the South assault caught on video

Three men have been arrested in connection with a beating filmed at the Rock the South music festival, Cullman police announced at a Wednesday morning press conference.

William Joseph Vinson Jr., 20, of Harvest; Zachary Scott Taylor, 21, of Athens, and Chance Marcus Alan Starling, 20, of Toney, have been charged with second degree assault — a felony charge.

They were arrested Tuesday in Madison County and made bond, officials said.

They face between a year to 10 years in prison if found guilty.

Reid Watts, 18, was hospitalized with a concussion, a fractured nose, and other injuries. Officials said Watts has been discharged from the hospital.

Cullman Police Chief David Nassetta wouldn’t get into specifics of what prompted the beating, but said it stemmed from a “frivolous” and “meaningless” reason.

“Nothing can really justify something like that, but in this particular incident, it was something that shouldn’t normally rise to the level of violence,” he said. “And it speaks to the level of character of these individuals we arrested.”

Kaci Howard in a Sunday Facebook post identified the victim as her son and shared video of the assault.

“PLEASE help me find the cowards who did this to my son tonight at Rock the South. There were several grown men (30s-40s) who jumped on him and beat him unconscious while his girlfriend stood there screaming and crying for help,” Howard stated.

“They continued beating him while he was on the ground until security finally got to them and got Reid and Katie out of there and to an ambulance. He has a fractured nose, concussion, stitches, knots the size of softballs on the back of his head. He never even saw it coming. They jumped on him out of nowhere because one of them said he spilled a drink on him. Reid didn’t even have a drink in his hand. Anyone who’s ever met Reid knows his personality. He never meets a stranger, he can literally get along with anyone. He is a good kid and he did not deserve this. PLEASE share and help me find who’s responsible.

Event organizers offered a $10,000 reward, plus lifetime tickets to the event, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the assault.

More than 105,000 people were estimated to have attended the event, with 35,000 to 40,000 attending at the time of the beating.

Nathan Baugh, one of the organizers of Rock the South, said he was “absolutely disgusted and appalled by the cowardly actions of a few individuals.”

He commended the concertgoers who submitted video to help find those responsible. Authorities credited the video will helping to identify the three men arrested, saying they received “thousands” of responses.

“I want to emphasize wholeheartedly that this behavior is neither widespread or common at any of our events,” Baugh said.

“Moving forward, we hope this sad and disappointing incident is a reminder that this type of behavior will never be tolerated at Rock the South.”

It was not immediately clear on Wednesday who, if anyone, will get the reward. Baugh said that process was just beginning.

Assisting in the investigation were the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office, Madison and Limestone County Sheriff’s Offices, Huntsville police, and the Metro Area Crime Center.

This year’s event included 16 acts during the three-night run, including headliners Chris Stapleton, Riley Green and Zach Bryan, with Dee Jay Silver spinning tunes between sets.
