3 arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband into Alabama prison

Three people were arrested Friday after they allegedly tried to smuggle contraband into an Alabama prison, according to the the state Department of Corrections.

Around 8:30 a.m. Friday, a K-9 officer with the ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division noticed a suspicious vehicle and a person attempting to smuggle contraband into Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore, the agency said.

The officer turned on their lights and sirens before the suspect reentered the vehicle and fled.

The officer pursued the vehicle south onto I-65 before the vehicle left the road and crashed at Exit 10.

Justin Duckworth was identified as the suspect spotted by the officer. He was apprehended after a short foot chase.

The vehicle’s driver, identified as Jajuan Williams, and the rear passenger, identified as Amber Shields, were taken into custody at the scene, the ADOC said.

All three suspects were taken to the Escambia County Jail.

Duckworth was charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, marijuana possession, certain person forbidden to possess a firearm, second-degree receiving stolen property and prohibited activities.

Williams was charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, felony attempting to elude, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree marijuana possession and prohibited activities.

Shields was charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, first-degree marijuana possession and prohibited activities.

The Poarch Creek Indians Police Department, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency assisted on the case.

The ADOC investigation was ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming, the agency said.
