28-year-old identified as man shot to death at south Birmingham apartment complex
Authorities have released the name of a man shot to death Wednesday during an argument at a south Birmingham apartment complex.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the victim as Jayvonne David Banks. He was 28 and lived in Birmingham.
The shooting happened at 5:09 p.m. at Adona apartments on Aspen Run.
South Precinct officers were already at the complex on an unrelated call when they heard shots fired. They encountered two men – one of them was down on the ground, the other armed.
Banks had collapsed on the sidewalk in front of a building. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:40 p.m.
The officers took the man with the gun into custody for questioning without further incident.
The preliminary investigation shows both of the men are connected to a woman who lives in the complex. The woman’s brother reportedly used a rifle to fatally shoot Banks, who was his sister’s boyfriend.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the victim was also armed. Police marked at least 14 shell casings at the scene.
The victim is Birmingham’s third homicide in 2023. At this time last year, Birmingham had already investigated nine homicides.
