28-year-old identified as man killed in shootout in Birminghamâs popular Lakeview District
Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a weekend shootout in Birmingham’s popular Lakeview District.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the homicide victim as Antonio Deandre Benson. He was 28 and lived in Birmingham.
The shooting happened at 2:51 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of 29th Street.
Off-duty officers working at nearby clubs got on the police radio and notified dispatchers of shots fired.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said an officer walked across the street from the clubs and saw a person shot near a food truck. They then found a second man wounded, also by the food truck.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Benson dead on the scene at 3:02 a.m. and transported the other to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the victims were involved in an argument with a second group of men and that dispute escalated into a physical fight, and then an exchange of gunfire.
“We believe one party from each group fired shots at each other,’’ Fitzgerald said. The two men shot were together.
No bystanders were injured. Another food truck was struck by bullets.
Fitzgerald said all those involved appeared to know each other. He did not know how many shots were fired but said the number was double digits.
“We had a big, big crowd out here, which speaks to just how senseless it was,’’ he said. “An officer told me there was a lot of people out here having a good time.”
No arrests have been announced.
