28-year-old fatally shot by Jefferson County deputy following chase now identified
Authorities have released the name of a man shot to death by a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy following a police chase Monday afternoon.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the slain man as Tedarrius Quentez Smith. He was 28.
Sheriff’s Deputy Chief David Agee said the pursuit began in Fairfield. Deputies, he said, were chasing someone with an outstanding warrant for kidnapping.
The pursuit ended when the black Infiniti came to a chain fence at the public housing community and could not go any further.
Three people reportedly then exited the vehicle. One of them was shot to death, and two others reportedly taken into custody.
Agee did not say if the suspect was armed or fired shots.
The shooting happened at 1:43 p.m., and Smith was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:52 p.m. He died in a grassy area under the bridge near the Collegeville public housing community.
Family members of the slain man stood just yards from his body, which was draped in a white sheet. Visibly upset, his mother and others insisted the slain 28-year-old did not have a weapon or fire any shots. They also said they believe his wife falsely accused him of kidnapping.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation. The agency has not yet released a statement on the fatal shooting.
