25-year-old ID’d as man killed in shootout at Ensley convenience store

Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a shootout outside an Ensley convenience store.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office and Birmingham police identified the slain man as Quintez Deshawn Ladd. He was 25.

The shooting happened just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the Smart Food Mart in the 900 block of 20th Street in Ensley.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said investigators believe an altercation led to an exchange of gunfire between the two men, injuring both of them.

When officers arrived at the store, they found Ladd unresponsive on the ground. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service rushed him to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m.

Investigators learned the second man arrived at the hospital by private vehicle. His injuries are not life-threatening.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many shots were fired, but crime scene technicians put out at least 28 evidence markers.

Wade said once the investigation is complete, the evidence will be presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Ladd is Birmingham’s 33rd homicide so far this year. Of those, three have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

Anyone with additional information in the fatal shooting is asked to call Birmingham detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
