25-year-old Alabama man charged in shooting deaths of his mother, 9-year-old half brother
A 25-year-old Etowah County man has been charged in the shooting death of his mother and his half-brother.
Brandon Wagnon is charged with two counts of murder in the Tuesday slayings of 45-year-old Brandi Whitt and 9-year-old Brantley Whitt.
Wagnon was booked into the Etowah County Jail at 1:52 a.m. Wednesday. He was set to have an Aniah’s Law bond hearing Thursday afternoon.
Deputies responded about 10 p.m. Tuesday to a report of someone shot on Glen Gap Road in the Highland/Tabor community, said Sheriff Jonathon Horton.
They arrived to find the Whitt and her younger son both had sustained gunshot wounds. Deputies started lifesaving measures until medics arrived, but both victims were pronounced dead on the scene.
Horton said Wagnon and his girlfriend were taken into custody on scene and taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning. The girlfriend was released without being charged.
A motive has not been disclosed.
“Any death is always difficult for everyone involved, but one involving a juvenile is especially hard on all emergency first responders,’’ Horton said. “We are extremely saddened and send our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
