24,000 bikes sold at retailers, including Walmart, recalled
Almost 24,000 E-bikes sold through major retailers, including Walmart, have been recalled due to concerns over lithium-ion batteries that can overheat and pose fire and burn hazards.
According to an alert from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall involves VIVI-E bikes with 36-volt lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.
A list of the E-bike model numbers and battery model numbers included in the recall is available on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. You can find the model information on the sales order documentation or some bicycle frames, CPSC said.
Bikes with the recalled batteries were sold online at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, eBay.com, viviebikes.com, wish.com, sears.com, wayfair.com and aliexpress.com from December 2020 through November 2023 for between $365 and $950.
So far, VIVI is aware of 14 reports of incidents of batteries overheating, including three reports of fires. However, no injuries have been reported.
Customers who own the E- bikes with the recalled lithium-ion batteries should stop using them immediately and contact VIVI to receive a free replacement battery and battery charger.
CPSC advises people not to throw the recalled batteries in the trash or curbside recycling bins or in used battery recycling boxes found at retail and home improvement stores. Recalled lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently than other batteries due to the increased risk of fire.
Some municipalities have special collection sites for lithium-ion batteries so contact your local center to see if it accepts them.
Once the battery has been properly disposed of, contact VIVI at [email protected].
