24-year-old shot, killed by Mobile officer carried AR-15, police said
A 24-year-old man was shot and killed by a Mobile police officer Tuesday as he attempted to evade arrest, armed with an AR-type rifle, according to the Mobile Police Department.
Shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday, investigators and SWAT team members were executing a search warrant in the 800 block of Charles Street.
As personnel entered the residence, 24-year-old Kordell Jones exited through a rear window armed with the military-grade weapon.
An officer encountered Jones and fired multiple rounds, according to the MPD, striking Jones at least once. Jones was later pronounced dead.
Another suspect, 19-year-old Jason Jones, was arrested at the scene in connection with a warrant for robbery. Additional arrests are possible.
The MPD’s Criminal Investigations Unit will conduct an investigation into the shooting, while the Office of Professional Responsibility will perform an administrative review. Simultaneously, the district attorney’s office will conduct an independent investigation.
The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, as is protocol for all officer-involved shootings.
