24-year-old man killed overnight in Center Point area shooting

A shooting in the Center Point area overnight left one man dead.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were notified at 9:18 p.m. Wednesday that someone had been shot in the 500 block of Tupelo Way, said Lt. Joni Money.

Once on the scene, they found a 24-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he later died.

His name has not yet been released.

Few details were immediately known, and no arrests have been made. Money said detectives are still working to establish a motive and develop leads in the case.

The victim is one of 10 people killed countywide in one week. Those homicides have happened in Center Point, Birmingham, Fairfield, Bessemer and Gardendale.

In all of Jefferson County this year, there have been 77 homicides. As of June 1, 2022, there had been 73 slayings countywide.
