24-year-old ID’d as man fatally shot inside an Ensley home

A man shot to death inside an Ensley home has now been identified.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Marquis Kantrell Drakes Jr. He was 24 and lived in Center Point.

Birmingham’s West Precinct officers responded at noon Wednesday to a report of a person shot in the 1400 block of 29th Street in Ensley.

When they arrived on the scene, they found Drakes on the floor of the residence. He had sustained a gunshot wound, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Drakes was taken by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 12:32 p.m.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was involved in an altercation inside the residence before shots were fired. Officers took a female into custody at the scene.

The woman is undergoing questioning by homicide detectives. A motive has not yet been determined.

Fitzgerald said investigators will present the case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal charges should be filed.

Drakes is the city’s 14th homicide so far this year. Of those, one has been ruled justifiable and has not been deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 18 homicides, including the 14 in Birmingham.
