24-year-old ID’d as man fatally shot by Tuscaloosa police during traffic stop

Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a confrontation with Tuscaloosa police.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit on Thursday identified the slain man as Tristan Decedric Clark. He was 24 and lived in Tuscaloosa.

The shooting happened midday Wednesday near Bowers Park, which is located on James I Harrison Jr. Parkway.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said Tuscaloosa police narcotics officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on 37th Street East near the intersection of James I Harrison Parkway.

Several people were inside the vehicle.

One of the occupants in the back seat had outstanding warrants. As an officer was asking the person to get out of the vehicle, the officer saw a gun in the waistband of the suspect – now identified as Clark.

The officer ordered Clark not touch the firearm.  Clark began reaching for the pistol, and the officer engaged in a physical altercation with the suspect attempting to keep the suspect from removing it, Kennedy said.

Clark, authorities said, was able remove the pistol and then refused commands to drop the firearm.

One officer fired his weapon, Kennedy said, and the suspect was struck several times.

Clark was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and the findings will be presented to the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s Office. Two officers are on leave which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
