23-year-old convicted of manslaughter in 2020 deadly shooting at Tuscaloosa apartment complex

A 23-year-old Cottondale man has been convicted on a lesser charge in a deadly shooting at a Tuscaloosa apartment complex.

Caleb Jashun Harris was initially charged with capital murder in the Aug. 30, 2020, killing of 35-year-old Justin Lanier Douglas.

Tuscaloosa County prosecutors earlier this year dismissed the capital murder charge after there was no evidence that a robbery occurred, court records show. He was then re-indicted on a murder charge and went to trial last week.

A jury deliberated less than an hour on Thursday before convicting Harris of manslaughter.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit has charged Devonte Montel Hinton with capital murder, said Capt. Jack Kennedy. He is charged in the death of 35-year-old Justin Lanier Douglas.

Capital murder charges against a second suspect, Devonte Montel Hinton, were dismissed in April.

The shooting happened that Sunday at Sun Valley Apartments on 36th Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. Douglas was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. A second person suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Harris was represented by attorneys Elizabeth Glasscox and Stan Glasscox.

“We appreciate that this jury closely and critically reviewed the facts, and law, and surrounding circumstances in making their decision that my client’s actions did not rise to the level of murder,’’ Elizabeth Glasscox said.

“The jury knew, and through their verdict, has told all who care to hear, that Caleb Harris is not a murderer,’’ Stan Glasscox said. “And for that, Caleb and I are most grateful.”
