23-year-old convicted of capital murder in 2019 Center Point home invasion

A 23-year-old man was convicted of capital murder in the slaying of another man during a Center Point home invasion more than three years ago.

A Jefferson County jury on Friday found Frank Steele guilty in Oct. 13, 2019, shooting death of 21-year-old Benjamin Gonzalez.

Steele will be sentenced to life without parole since Gonzalez’s killing was not a death penalty case.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just before 7 p.m. that Sunday to the 1800 block of Martinique Drive N.E. Neighbors called 911 after hearing shots fired in the area of the apartment complex.

Gonzalez was pronounced dead on the scene.

Steele was taken into custody within days. The charge was capital because it involved a burglary.

His trial began Monday before Circuit Judge Stephen Wallace.

The case was prosecuted by deputy district attorneys Warren Brooks and Tiffany Ould.

Steele was represented by Jefferson County public defenders Adam Danneman, Paul McDaniel and Madelinn Hillsmith.

“The State of Alabama is happy the family of Benjamin Gonzalez can have some closure,” according to a statement released by the district attorney’s office, “and that the jury held the defendant accountable for this senseless tragedy.”
