223 shots fired in Mobile over New Yearâs holiday, police say
Mobile police responded to 223 reports of shots fired citywide over New Year’s Eve, the agency reported Tuesday.
The figure includes all calls related to gunfire or fireworks called into police as gunfire, the Mobile Police Department reports.
Mobile police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred in the 300 block of Dauphin Street around 12:16 a.m. on Monday. The shooting occurred during New Year’s Eve festivities in downtown Mobile.
Other cities in Alabama also dealt with large numbers of incidences of illegal shooting of guns in the air, often referred to as “celebratory gunfire,” to ring in the New Year.
In Birmingham, two people received non-life threatening injuries from celebratory gunfire. Police officers also reportedly took shelter from 11:45 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. underneath viaducts or other coverings to steer clear of falling bullets.
The incidences in Birmingham sparked criticism from council members.
“It’s very disappointing,’’ Councilman Hunter Williams said, “when we have adults make such poor decisions for whatever enjoyment they would get out of firing a weapon in the air that they would jeopardize the lives of their neighbors and devalue the community in which they live.’’
Bessemer police reported 56 shots-fired calls Sunday night into Monday morning, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported 14. No injuries were reported by either of those agencies.
In Mobile, 223 reports included all calls related to gunfire or fireworks called in as gunfire. Fireworks are allowed in Mobile on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, according to an ordinance adopted last year. The new ordinance prohibits anyone from possessing, storing or selling or using any firework within the city limits except from July 3-4 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1.
The prohibition excludes novelty fireworks like sparklers, smoke bombs and black snakes.
