22-year-old charged with capital murder in deadly Alexander City home invasion

A home invasion in Alexander City left one man dead and another in jail.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency was called 11:15 a.m. Saturday to lead the investigation at a residence in the 4000 block of Washington Street.

Toyias Gopher, 32, was found dead inside, the victim of a home invasion robbery, said ALEA Capt. Jeremy Burkett.

Additional details have not been released.

Steven “McKinley” Abercrombie, 22, of Alex City, is charged with capital murder during a robbery.

Abercrombie was booked into the Tallapoosa County Jail at 9:08 p.m. Saturday and remains held without bond. Jail records list other charges of third-degree burglary and second-degree theft of property.

Mike Segrest, district attorney for the 5th Judicial Circuit, posted a statement Sunday night saying he was notified 10:05 a.m. Saturday of the murder and that Abercrombie was a suspect.

At 10:12 a.m., Segrest said, he contacted the Attorney General’s Office asking that office to take over the investigation and prosecution because of an internal conflict of interest involving an employee in the district attorney’s office.

“The District Attorney’s Office has been fire-walled from this investigation from the very beginning and does not have any information related to the investigation,” Segrest said.

“Deepest condolences and prayers for the victim’s family and friends,” he said. “Justice will be served.”

The Alexander City Police Department, the Montgomery Police Department, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, ATF and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office assisted in the investigation.
