21-year-old charged in shooting during basketball game at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church
A Birmingham man has been charged after a shot was fired during a pickup basketball at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.
Homewood police on Saturday obtained an attempted murder warrant against Kerry Jermaine Austin-Thornton. He is 21.
He will be transferred from the Homewood City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail. His bond is set at $60,000.
Police were dispatched at 9:39 a.m. Thursday to the church’s recreation center on Oxmoor Road on a report of shots fired.
Sgt. John Carr said Austin-Thornton fired one shot inside the rec center and left in a vehicle.
Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument over a basketball game. Details of the dispute have not been released.
No one was injured in the shooting.
Austin-Thornton was taken into custody several hours later at a home in the 7800 block of 6th Avenue North in Birmingham.
