21-year-old charged in shooting at Birmingham gas station that killed man, injured woman

A suspect in the fatal shooting of a man at an east Birmingham gas station is in custody after he was arrested by teams of law enforcement offers in a Grayson Valley neighborhood.

Deeric Mikell Lewis, 21, of Center Point, is charged with murder in the Tuesday night killing of 33-year-old Colby Lemar Cade. He is also charged with attempted murder in the wounding of a woman who survived, and with discharging a firearm into an occupied building or vehicle.

Birmingham police took Lewis into custody Thursday afternoon on Molly Drive. He has been held in the Birmingham City Jail and now that warrants have been issued, he will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond.

A motive has not been disclosed.

The incident began around 6:36 p.m. Tuesday when gunfire erupted at the Shell station on the corner of Old Springville Road and Brewster Road.

Cade and the female drove off in a sedan and were believed to have been seeking medical attention when they crashed into one of the bay doors at Station 30, which is about a half block away.

Birmingham Fire Chief Cory Moon said there were no firefighters injured when the vehicle struck the building.

Both victims were taken to UAB Hospital where Cade was pronounced dead.
