21-foot Orca whale dies after washing ashore on Florida coast; NOAA calls event ‘extremely rare’

An adult orca whale, measuring 21 feet, died Wednesday after it washed up on a Florida beach.

News 4 reports the orca, which is believed to be approximately 6,000 pounds and 6 years old, was beached at Jungle Hut Park in Palm Coast.

According to the report, there has never been a recorded incident of an orca being stranded in the southeast.

Blair Mase of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called the event “extremely rare.”

Mase said the orca will be taken to SeaWorld for further examination.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook there were no obvious signs of trauma on the body.

On Wednesday, law enforcement was asking people to avoid the area  about 30 miles north of Daytona Beach.
