2024 NFL leaders didn’t reach Alabama-roots single-season bests
During the 2024 NFL regular season, four statistical categories were led by players from Alabama high schools and colleges. But even the league leaders couldn’t top the established single-season standards established by players with Alabama football roots in the past.
The NFL leaders from Alabama high schools and colleges included:
· Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (Alabama) and Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry (Alabama) tied for the NFL lead with 16 rushing touchdowns apiece.
· Gibbs led the NFL with 20 touchdowns (16 rushing and four receiving).
· Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II (Alabama) led the NFL with 132 interception-return yards. He had 4 more yards than Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney (Alabama).
· New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood (Auburn) led the NFL with 98 solo tackles.
Henry’s 1,911 rushing yards in 2024 rank 11th on the NFL’s all-time single-season list. But he didn’t lead the league in rushing because Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley turned in the ninth 2,000-yard rushing season in league history. Henry also didn’t break the Alabama-roots single-season record because he had the eighth 2,000-yard rushing season in league history in 2020.
Henry also had the fifth season with more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage by a player from an Alabama or high school in 2024, but the Alabama-roots single-season record set in 1983 by William Andrews (Auburn) stood up through a 41st campaign.
