2023 NFL Draft: Live second-day update

The first round of the 88th NFL Draft proved to be another record-breaker for Alabama. Three Crimson Tide players entered the NFL on Thursday night, extending Alabama’s streak of years with a first-round selection to 15, the longest in draft history.

In the common-draft era (since 1967, when the NFL and AFL held their first combined draft in preparation for the league’s merger), Alabama is now the first program to produce a first-round offensive player in nine consecutive drafts and the first to have more than one offensive player selected in the first round of five consecutive drafts.

MORE NFL DRAFT:

· TEXANS RACE THE CLOCK TO SELECT WILL ANDERSON JR.

· JAHMYR GIBBS ‘SHOCKED’ TO BE THE NO. 12 PICK

· BRYCE YOUNG HAD SHORT NOTICE THAT HE WAS THE NO. 1 PICK

How many players will Alabama add to its draft tally on Friday, when the draft resumes at 6 p.m. CDT with the second round? ABC, ESPN and NFL Network will televise the picks, which will include 32 second-round selections and 39 third-round choices.

In the first round, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young went No. 1 to the Carolina Panthers, linebacker Will Anderson Jr. went No. 3 to the Houston Texans and running back Jahmyr Gibbs went No. 12 to the Detroit Lions.

Georgia and Ohio State also produced three picks apiece in the first round. But while Alabama and Georgia had six selections, the rest of the SEC produced three. That left the SEC tied with the Big Ten for the most picks so far in this year’s draft. The Big 12 produced six players, ACC four and Pac-12 three who were chosen in the first round.

The SEC has had more players selected than any other conference in 16 consecutive drafts and produced 12 first-round picks last year.

The SEC’s other first-rounders on Friday night were:

· Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson: No. 4, Indianapolis Colts

· Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter: No. 9, Philadelphia Eagles

· Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright: No. 10, Chicago Bears

· Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones: No. 14, Pittsburgh Steelers

· Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes: No. 16, Washington Commanders

· Georgia linebacker Nolan Smith: No. 30, Philadelphia Eagles

Other SEC programs are expected to be involved in Friday night’s action with Arkansas linebacker Drew Sanders (a former Alabama player), Auburn pass-rusher Derick Hall, Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, LSU pass-rusher B.J. Ojulari, South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith and Texas A&M safety Antonio Johnson lined up to get their schools on the board.

The Los Angeles Rams at No. 36, Miami Dolphins at No. 51, Denver Broncos at No. 67 and San Francisco 49ers at No. 99 are scheduled to make their first selections in this year’s draft on Friday night after being without a first-round pick.

That’s barring any trades, of course. On Thursday night, teams made six trades during the draft.

The Pittsburgh Steelers hold the first pick in the second round. In the previous 14 drafts, the 32nd selection would have been the final choice in the first round. But the Dolphins were forced to forfeit their first-round pick as punishment for violating the NFL’s tampering policy, leaving this year’s first round with 31 selections.

In the first round, six edge rushers, five offensive tackles, four cornerbacks, four wide receivers, three quarterbacks, two linebackers, two running backs and one tight end were picked.

The three quarterbacks came off the board in the first four selections. It could be that only two more will be picked on Thursday night, with Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker joining Levis. The SEC has never had more than two quarterbacks selected in the first two rounds of an NFL Draft.
