20-year-old woman hit, killed while sitting on I-65 in Cullman County; 19-year-old injured

One pedestrian was killed, and another injured when they were hit by an SUV on Interstate 65 in Cullman County.

Alabama State Troopers identified the fatality victim as Madelyn R. Guerra. She was 20 and lived in Maryland.

Guerra, according to Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey, was sitting in the interstate when she and another woman 19-year-old Tierra R. Cathcart of Anniston, were struck by an oncoming vehicle. The motorist, 40-year-old Julie B. Austel of Indiana, was driving a Toyota Highlander.

Guerra was pronounced dead on the scene. Cathcart was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

The crash happened at 2:30 a.m. Saturday on I-65 near Alabama 69, about six miles south of Cullman.

The investigation is ongoing by Troopers.
