20-year-old shot in struggle with Shelby County deputies now charged with attempted murder
A Chelsea man shot in a weekend struggle with Shelby County sheriff’s deputies is now charged with attempted murder.
Nicholas Tyler Hardin, 20, is charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count each of first-degree marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hardin remains held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $311,000.
Deputies respond about 11:30 a.m. Saturday to a report of a domestic incident on Brandy Circle in Chelsea. When they arrived, they encountered Hardin who they said was concealing a pistol.
Deputies tried to disarm Hardin, at which time they said he became physically resistant and brandished a pistol. He was then shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Hardin was taken to UAB Hospital. Once released, he was booked into the jail.
“I am grateful for the quick response of our patrol deputies, the 911 dispatchers, and the Chelsea Fire Department,’’ Sheriff John Samaniego said. “These first responders face immeasurable risks daily, but remain steadfast in their service to our communities.”
The Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force, under the direction of the District Attorney’s Office, is leading the investigation at Samaniego’s request.
