20-year-old sentenced to federal prison for armed holdups at 3 Alabaster businesses
A Shelby County man has been sentenced to federal prison in a spate of business robberies in Alabaster in 2023.
U.S. District Judge Anna M. Manasco sentenced 20-year-old Dorian Blake Bivins, of Alabaster, to 15 years for armed holdups at Shell, Chevron, and Whataburger, according to a Thursday announcement by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and ATF Nashville Field Division Acting Special Agent in Charge Jason Stankiewicz.
A shot was fired during one of the robberies.
Bivins was 18 when he was arrested in June of 2023 on state charges of attempted murder and first-degree robbery.
Police said officers on responded on Monday, June 5, 2023, to Interstate Shell on a robbery call. The suspect had fled by the time police arrived, but detectives launched an investigation and identified Bivins as the suspect.
Warrants were obtained against him.
Two days later, while officers were preparing to go arrest Bivins on the Monday robbery charges, they received a report of a person shot at a second business – Interstate Chevron.
Once on the scene, police said, officers quicky determined Bivins was also the suspect in the new case.
They learned the victim had been shot at but not injured.
Again, Bivins fled before officers arrived.
After an extensive search, Bivins was taken into custody. He is still facing trial on the state charges.
Bivins in September pleaded guilty to Hobbs Act Robbery and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.
According to the plea agreement, Bivins attempted robberies of the three businesses in a span of 12 days in May and June 2023.
Bivins committed two of the offenses while armed with a pistol and discharged the firearm during his final attempted robbery.
The ATF investigated the case along with the Alabaster Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel S. McBrayer prosecuted.
