20-year-old ID’d as fleeing driver killed in crash during chase from Cullman County to Jefferson County

Authorities have released the name of young man who was killed in a crash while fleeing from Cullman County sheriff’s deputies.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the fatality victim as Alexander Lee Currington. He was 20 and lived in Crane Hill.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Curington was the driver of a red Chevrolet Tahoe involved in a chase that started in Cullman County and ended in Jefferson.

The incident began about 7:30 p.m. Monday in Bremen, said Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry. He said deputies tried to stop a vehicle and the driver refused to stop.

The sheriff said multiple shots were fired at Cullman County deputies. Once the pursuit crossed over into Jefferson County, numerous other law enforcement agencies joined in the chase.

The chase ended about 8 p.m. when authorities said Curington reportedly lost control of his vehicle, causing the vehicle to flip and role multiple times. The crash happened near the Shell service station at Morris Majestic Road and U.S. 31.

Currington was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:30 p.m.

Gentry said no shots were fired by law enforcement officers.

Yates said an autopsy showed that Curington did not have any gunshot wounds and died of blunt force trauma from the crash.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation, and has not released any information regarding that probe.
