20 actors whose Southern accents are real
If you thought Reese Witherspoon’s Tennessee accent was spot-on as June Carter Cash in “Walk the Line,” you were right – she grew up in Nashville. Actors often work hard to lose Southern accents – until a part calls for one. The problem with that is that sometimes when actors dig deep to find their original Southern accent, something goes wonky and they sound, well, fake.
Here are 20 actors whose Southern accents are real – even if they sound fake in some roles. (This is not meant to be a list of all Southern actors. To suggest your favorite, email [email protected].)
Lucas Black
Yes, that thick drawl you heard in 1996’s “Sling Blade” and more recently in TV’s “NCIS: New Orleans” is real. Lucas Black, born Nov. 29, 1982, in Speake, Ala., is a rare actor who has refused to lose his accent for roles. Hear it in the video above.
Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock has played many Southern roles, including Ellen Roark in “A Time to Kill,” Birdie Pruitt in “Hope Floats” and Siddalee Walker in “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.” Perhaps her most iconic role was as famed Alabama author Nelle Harper Lee in “Infamous.” She was born July 26, 1964 in Arlington, Va., to Alabama native John W. Delta Burke
One of Delta Burke’s most famous roles was as the quintessential Southern beauty queen Suzanne Sugarbaker on TV’s “Designing Women.” Burke was born July 20, 1956, in Orlando, Fla. She is married to fellow Southerner Gerald McRaney. Hear her accent in the video above.
Lacey Chabert
Lacey Chabert, who began her career on the TV show “Party of Five” and had a memorable role in 2004’s “Mean Girls,” Lacey Chabert was born Sept. 30, 1982, in Purvis, Miss. She has portrayed Southerners, most notably as Rachel Sawyer in 2002’s “Hometown Legend,” which was filmed in Foley and Mobile, Ala. Hear her accent in the video above.
Harry Connick Jr.
Harry Connick Jr, born Sept. 11, 1967, in New Orleans, La., is best known as a jazz singer but he puts his distinctive Southern accent to good use in film roles, as well. Dakota Fanning
Dakota Fanning, an accomplished child actress who successfully transitioned to adult roles, was born Feb. 23, 1994, in Conyers, Ga. She put her accent to good use in the Southern feature “The Secret Life of Bees,” in which she starred with Queen Latifah. Hear it in the video above.
Megan Fox
Megan Fox was born May 16, 1986, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. She is best known for her roles in the “Transformer” films. She put her accent to good use as Leila in 2010’s “Jonah Hex.” Hear her accent in the video above.
Morgan Freeman
Although Morgan Freeman’s distinctive deep voice is one of the most recognized in the world, he can call on his Tennessee roots when needed to give it that Southern touch. Freeman was born June 1, 1937, in Memphis. One of his best-known Southern roles was as Hoke Colburn in 1989’s “Driving Miss Daisy,” which won the Oscar for Best Film that year. Jennifer Lawrence
Lawrence was born Aug. 15, 1990, in Indian Hills, Ky. One of the most striking uses of her accent was in the 2010 film “Winter’s Bone,” set in the Ozarks. She was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for the role. She won the Oscar and a Golden Globe for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook” two years later. Gerald McRaney
Gerald McRaney was born Aug. 19, 1947, in Collins, Miss. He is best known for roles on TV shows such as “Simon & Simon,” “Major Dad” and “Deadwood.” He also had a recurring role as a Southern writer and Suzanne Sugarbaker’s ex-husband on “Designing Women.” He would marry Delta Burke, who portrayed Suzanne Sugarbaker, in 1989. Mary-Louise Parker was born Aug. 2, 1964, in Fort Jackson, S.C. Although she is known more recently for portraying a drug-dealing single mom on TV’s “Weeds,” her most quintessential Southern role was as Ruth Jamison in 1991’s “Fried Green Tomatoes,” based on the book by Alabama-born author and actress Fannie Flagg.
