2 wounded when shots reportedly fired into a vehicle traveling on I-59 in Birmingham
Two men were injured when someone reportedly shot into their vehicle Friday night on a Birmingham interstate.
The shooting happened sometime before 8:45 p.m. on Interstate 59 northbound. The victims exited the interstate onto Chalkville Mountain Road in Trussville and stopped at a gas station for help.
Trussville police and fire medics responded to the scene.
Police Chief Eric Rush said there were three men in the vehicle. One was shot in the leg, and the other sustained a graze wound to the chest. Both were transported to UAB Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
The third occupant in the vehicle was not injured.
The victims told police they were from Jasper and on their way back to Jasper when the shooting happened. They were not, however, heading in the right direction so authorities don’t know if they were lost at that point.
They told police someone in a silver Toyota sports car shot at them as they were traveling on the interstate. They believe the shooting happened somewhere between the airport and Roebuck exits in Birmingham, but investigators are still trying to sort out the details.
A motive has not been determined.
Rush said Birmingham police are en route to the scene since the victims indicated the shooting happened in the city.
