2 workers killed by vehicle while cutting grass on Alabama interstate now identified

Two men were killed, and another seriously injured when they were hit by a vehicle while they were cutting grass on Interstate 85 in Chambers County.

The crash happened at 6:19 p.m. Monday on I-85 northbound near Valley.

Valley Police Chief Mike Reynolds said the crew was cutting grass in the median when a northbound vehicle left the road and struck the workers.

The driver, 44-year-old Randall Shane Lankford, told officers he was traveling in the left lane when a semi-truck driving on the right tried to merge into his lane. He lost control of his vehicle and hit the men.

Pablo Gutierrez Cruz, 44, and Reuben Lopez Perez, age unknown, were pronounced dead on the scene.

Rumaldo Lopez Perez, age unknown, was airlifted to a Columbus hospital. His condition was not immediately available, Reynolds said.

ALEA State Troopers and the Lee County Coroner’s office are assisting in the investigation.
