2 women jailed on child abuse charges in Morgan County
Decatur police arrested two women on charges of aggravated child abuse Thursday.
I’tionna Monae Leslie, 27, and Casandra Yvette Leslie, 59 were booked into the Morgan County Jail following their arrests, according to court documents.
They were indicted by a grand jury in September 2024. They are being held in jail without bonds pending an Aniah’s Law hearing on April 30. Their arraignment hearing is June 23.
The two have been accused of “torture, willfully abuse, cruelly beat or otherwise maltreat” a child in their custody, according to the indictment.
It is not clear when prosecutors claim the incidents in the indictment occurred.
I’tionna Leslie had previously been arrested on June 13, 2023, for willful abuse of a child under 18. According to court records, Decatur police responded to an incident on Feb. 28, 2023, in reference to an unresponsive 1-year-old child. The child was initially taken to Decatur Morgan Hospital and then transported to Children’s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham in critical condition.
The document says that at the time, Casandra Leslie and I’tionna Leslie were present in the home, according to records.
The child was later admitted to the hospital’s Child Abuse Pediatrics Division. According to documents, the child was found to have a “complex skull fracture to the back of [the child’s] head along with a subdural hematoma.” The physician did not believe the injury was accidental.
According to records, Casandra Leslie voluntarily met with a Decatur police detective in March 2023 to provide pictures of a previous burn incident involving the child.
The photographs showed a burn injury on the child’s left arm. The Leslies did not seek medical attention for the child’s burn injury, Casandra Leslie told the detective. She told the investigator the incident happened in June or July 2022 when the child was about six months old.
According to documents, second degreen burns covered around five percent of the child’s total body surface. It was determined that both Casandra Leslie and I’tionna Leslie either contributed, concealed or caused injuries to the child.
Circuit Court Judge Charles Elliott dismissed the case without prejudice on Nov. 5, 2024, according to documents.
