2 victims in spate of Birmingham homicides identified as teen, 21-year-old
Authorities have released the names of two of the victims killed in the spate of deadly violence in Birmingham over a 10-day span.
Jonathan O’Dell, 18, was found shot to death Monday on an Ensley street.
Maleak Chandler, 21, was found shot to death Saturday night, also in the middle of a roadway on the city’s east side.
Chandler’s family had been searching for him all day Sunday, unaware that he had been killed the night before. They were notified on Monday after authorities were able to identify him.
O’Dell’s slaying marked Birmingham’s sixth homicide between Saturday and Monday, and the 11th in 10 days.
As of Monday, there had been 30 homicides so far this year in Birmingham. Of those, three have been ruled justifiable.

In O’Dell’s death, West Precinct officers were dispatched on a ShotSpotter alert — indicating that shots had been fired — in the 1600 block of 27th Street Ensley around 5:20 p.m.
Officers found O’Dell unresponsive in the roadway in the 2700 block of Avenue P, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:36 p.m.
“Currently, our officers are working to piece together what took place that led to the victim being shot,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald said on the scene. “From what we observed at the scene, we believe the shooting took place near where the victim was located, and that’s based on shell casings in the roadway.”
Chandler’s body was discovered when Birmingham police about 11:15 p.m. Saturday started receiving calls of shots fired of 8200 block of Vassar Avenue. As they were en route, officer received information that someone had been shot.
He, too, was found dead in the roadway. Investigators marked roughly a dozen shell cases in the road.
Chandler’s homicide came hours after a man was shot to death on Fourth Avenue West in the Bush Hills community Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday morning, two men were gunned down on Boise Avenue and another was shot to death at 6233 Blocton Ave., an area in Birmingham near Bessemer, Brighton, Midfield and Lipscomb.
“We just have to echo the words of Chief (Scott) Thurmond when he says. ‘stop and think,’’’ Fitzgerald said at the scene of Chandler’s slaying. “We’re seeing a lot of these homicides begin with very small motives and we’re choosing violence to resolve those conflicts.”
No arrests have been announced in any of weekend killings.
